Our Garden
‘Our Garden Project’ was an idea we decided to develop in September 2018. Our main aim was to support Biodiversity on our schools grounds. We wanted to have more varieties of plants, animals and insects in our garden in order to aim for our 5th Green Flag – the ‘Biodiversity’ flag. We also wanted to become more involved with nature and learn how to dig, plant and weed the garden. The 5th & 6th Class children gardened in teams of 4 under adult supervision. The younger children planted some seeds in their classrooms before putting them into the ground. We also hoped to incorporate some home-made bird feeders and nesting boxes. We hoped to create an edible garden and use the plants to make vegetables soup. This is going to be a long-term project undertaken by the whole school and by the time the Junior Classes reach Senior level, they will all have had a chance to be heavily involved with the garden. It is hoped that all of the children will transfer the skills and knowledge they have learned to their gardens at home. None of this would be possible without the help of Mrs. Lindsay Orton and Mrs. Linda Gilsenan who are both skilled gardeners. They have a vast range of knowledge about plants and their willingness to commit to this long-term project was a crucial part in our decision to push forward with ‘The Garden Project’.
