Green Schools

At Killyon NS, we are proud participants in An Taisce’s Green School Flag programme, assessed by Meath County Council. Over the years, we have successfully earned flags for five key environmental themes: Travel, Water, Energy, Biodiversity, and Litter & Waste. Now, we’re working towards our next goal, the Global Citizenship Flag, focusing on Litter and Waste.
Our Green Team, elected annually by the students, leads the charge in promoting sustainability. One of the highlights of our year is Green Day, where we dress in green and explore environmental themes through fun, cross-class activities.
How We Reduce Litter & Waste:
♻ Waste-Free Lunches – Students use reusable lunch boxes and bottles, taking wrappers and leftovers home.
🗑 Smart Sorting – Classrooms have clearly labelled compost, recycling, and landfill bins.
🍃 Playtime Pledge – No packaging allowed in the yard, leading to a noticeable drop in litter.
📚 Sustainable Choices – From book swaps to clothes collections, we prioritise reuse.
☕ Eco-Friendly Staff Room – Even our tea bags are compostable!
Recycling Beyond the School Gates
We’re proud to support Re-turn recycling bins at Moran’s Shop & Bar in the Hill of Down and at our school, encouraging the whole community to recycle plastic bottles and cans. This initiative helps reduce waste, raise awareness, and promote recycling in our local area.
We continue to maintain our progress in Travel, Water, Energy, and Biodiversity, proving that small actions make a big difference. Together, we’re building a greener future one flag at a time! 🌍💚
